At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled the next-generation Mac operating system, macOS Sequoia. This latest iteration, macOS 15 Sequoia, introduces an array of new features and built-in tools, including the innovative Automatic Windows Tiling. This new window management feature allows users to effortlessly organize open windows into a layout that perfectly fits their needs.
PC users have enjoyed this functionality since the advent of Windows 7 and its Aero Snap feature. In contrast, Mac users previously depended on third-party applications such as Magnet and Rectangle to replicate these layouts. However, with the introduction of macOS 15, there is now a built-in tool that eliminates the need for any additional software. Let’s explore how to utilize the Windows Tiling feature in macOS 15 Sequoia.

Automatic Windows Tiling in macOS Sequoia
You can activate the innovative Windows Tiling feature through multiple methods, complete with an array of keyboard shortcuts. Apple’s macOS Sequoia enhances this experience by automatically proposing window rearrangement options. You have the flexibility to position tiles side by side or tuck them into corners, allowing for a greater number of apps to be visible simultaneously. Follow these steps to utilize the Windows Tiling feature in macOS Sequoia:
- Ensure that your Mac is equipped with macOS Sequoia, which is presently available in Developer Beta.
- Position a window by dragging it to the edge, top, bottom, or any corner of your screen.
- macOS Sequoia will display a grey border to indicate a potential tiled position.
- Upon letting go of the window, it will seamlessly settle into its designated position.
- Additionally, various keyboard shortcuts exist to enable automatic window tiling.
- You can simultaneously press Function, Control, and any of the arrow keys: Left, Right, Up, or Down.
- To adjust the window titles, hold down Function, Control, and Shift, then press any of the arrow keys: Left, Right, Up, or Down.
- Pressing Function + Control + R allows you to restore a window tile to its original dimensions.
- You can alternatively navigate to the top Menu bar and select Window -> Move & Resize to adjust the window dimensions.
- To increase the number of windows, navigate to Window, then select Move & Resize, and choose Quarters.
- Moreover, by selecting a window and hovering over the green maximize button located in the top-left corner, you can resize the window or transfer it to your iPad, provided you are signed in with the same Apple ID.
This method allows you to position two app windows next to each other or display multiple apps simultaneously on your Mac. Once you’ve used auto tiling, manually moving a window will cause it to revert to its original dimensions.
Be aware that certain applications are inherently limited in how small they can be resized. As a result, you may encounter tiled windows that extend off the screen or overlap one another. Should the automatic tiling system create gaps between windows, navigate to System Settings -> Desktop and Dock. Scroll down to the Windows section and disable the “Tiled windows have margins” option. This adjustment will minimize the spaces between the windows.
Given that we are currently at beta 2, the automatic window tiling feature is functional, albeit with minor delays and improper display in the quarter layout. However, it performs correctly when windows are arranged side by side.
Naturally, Apple is expected to make a few adjustments, and with any luck, all the features will function smoothly once the stable release of macOS Sequia is launched later this year.
